How vulnerable is Maine's coast to climate change? | Maine Explained
Many coastal communities were impacted by several major storms during the winter of 2024. That’s put a spotlight on a major question facing the state: just how vulnerable is Maine’s coast to a warming world, and what steps do we need to take to prepare? That’s what we dive into in this episode of Maine Explained.
Correction: At 02:50 in the video, we refer to Susie Arnold as a climatologist. Arnold is not a climatologist with a climatology degree, but a marine biologist by training who has been working on ocean climate change for 12 years.
You can head to here to look at flood insurance rate maps for much of southern Maine: maine.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=3c09351397764bd2aa9ba385d2e9efe7
You can also use this tool from FEMA to assess flood risks at a specific location: msc.fema.gov/portal/search?AddressQuery=Maine
This "Coastal Risk Explorer" tool, from the Nature Conservancy, shows the potential effects of sea level rise on many of the state's coastal roadways: www.maps.tnc.org/maine/coastalriskexplorer/
And this memo provides more detail on Pete Slovinsky's "DAAPR" method for responding to storms and sea level rise across the coast. It also helps to break down some of the complicated jargon inside flood maps: www.southportland.gov/DocumentCenter/View/1569/Memo-from-Peter-Slovinsky-Marine-Geologist-with-Maine-Geological-Survey-Department-of-Agriculture-Conservation-and-Forestry

Moxie is famous for 2 things: Being advertised by Ted Williams back in the day...and tasting like shit 😁 I would describe the taste as bubble gum flavored soda.

It technically doesn't qualify as a "soda" it's not carbonated. It's a tonic.

I grew up drinking this. Most underrated soda. I used to work with my stepfather as a bartender in San Francisco. I found could almost replicate the flavor by mixing Coke, root beer, and Angostura Bitters.

Moxie was my favorite soda in the first three decades of my life but I kind of drifted away from it and it is a little hard to find, even in Boston. I like it but I always told people it tasted bad just to warn them!

farmers find them every year plowing the fields, the stones would then be rolled to mark the edge of a field or more commonly, the property line.

I moved to Maine from California. Always been a Dr. Pepper drinker, but in order to immerse myself in Maine culture, I tried Moxie. I absolutely love it. So much in fact that I drank too much of it and raised my blood sugar! Now I drink it occasionally.

I remember seeing Moxie 'easter egg' ads in old, old issues of Mad magazine as a kid, then as an adult I got a few cans of it. I drank a couple of them, it was good. I still have some full cans just as mementos.

I grew up with a LOVE Moxie (though it's seldom I get it). A friend of mine once described the taste as "smoked cola" - I think that's a good description.

I'm from Tennessee, stopped by a Hannaford's store in New Hampshire once while visiting my in-laws, grabbed a 2 liter bottle of Moxie, and mentioned I've never tried Moxie before while at the register. So they actually gave me the 2 liter bottle for free. All I'll say is its very much an acquired taste. Someone once told me I'd be better off licking a telephone pole than trying it. I don't quite agree, but it tastes like licorice mixed with something else.

I was introduced to Moxie in 2000 while vacationing in your wonderful State.I was on my way to Sugarloaf and made a grocery stop in Kingfield beforehand.I noticed a Moxie vending machine inside the grocery store. It was a new brand to me.I'm a Southerner.I was curious and wanted to try the product.I don't remember the cost but it wasn't much and I had change in my pocket so I took the plunge. After taking a small sip my taste buds were in uncharted waters to say the least.I took another sip and decided that I liked it.We have Moxie locally now but only in the gift shops of Cracker Barrel restaurants.I pick up a bottle occasionally since we have a location nearby.Moxie has no equal and it's difficult to make comparisons. The closest that I can come is a local carbonated beverage that has been around since 1901,Buffalo Rock ginger ale.I have a Moxie bottle as well as a can in my collection. Thanks for posting this informative video.I learned some interesting facts about Moxie.

I worked for John in the summer of 1986 after I graduated from Unity College. I lived in a tent a couple of miles from their business. The Kennebec River was a wonderful place to raft seven days a week. Some days were quite dangerous, as the rafts back in the 80s were long, too flexible, and had no footholds. Today's rafts are shorter, sturdier, and safer. I loved Maine rafting that one summer. It led me to future guiding in California, Oregon and Washington State. What a nice trip down memory lane watching this film, 50 years since it was filmed. Wow!! Greenville was a tiny wee town. it's grown quite a bit in the past 4 decades.

She's got Moxie! one of the longest running ad campaigns that once it was introduced, it ran on its own legs for DECADES. Because it started prior to 1900, and kept going well into the late 50s! That, is a world famous ad for a world famous soda! The thing that blows me away? Moxie was bigger than Coca-Cola for a few decades, Moxie was nationwide when Coca-Cola was regional. Thats amazing. Sadly, now Coca-Cola now owns Moxie.
